In a reverential ceremony
held this past January 30, a transit facility on the near Eastside
of San Antonio was named after Charles B. Shannon, a former chair
of the VIA Metropolitan Transit Board of Trustees.
Shannon had held the position of board chair for two years when he
passed away in his sleep in February 2003. VIA chose to honor his
memory by naming the information center in the Ellis Alley Park
and Ride after him.
Charless passing took us all by surprise last year, said VIA
President and Chief Executive Officer John M. Milam. He was a
true leader in our community, a passionate advocate for public
transportation, and a dear friend to us all. He is sorely missed.
Shannon had served on the VIA Board of Trustees since 1995, and he
was elected to the position of chair by his fellow board members
in January 2001. Under his leadership, VIA took a significant step
in the modernization of its bus fleet with the procurement of 139
new, low-floor, environ-mentally-friendly buses. Shannon also led
the agencys Planning and Development Committee, and he was
instrumental in making the Ellis Alley Park and Ride a reality.
Shannon was a leader on the Eastside of San Antonio for 35 years.
He was a voice for small businesses and community partnerships,
and he played active roles on many boards and commissions that
promote neighborhood and community
improvement. He was the executive director of the Davis-Scott
Branch YMCA for many years, and he also held the position of
District xecutive for theSouthern Region of the YMCA of San
Antonio and the Hill Country. |
